I wanted to report a concern with the nurses handling the drive because they put myself and two other donors in a compromising position. I had an appointment scheduled for 6pm and showed up with my Rapid Pass completed. I did not mind the wait because I knew they were busy (also, every time I go to donate blood itโ€™s always a 1-2 hour process regardless of where I donate so it must be normal). However, what concerned me was that the two nurses did not have time to set me up so they had the man sitting at the table that was keeping track of the blood bags and stocking the truck put the needle in me. He was neither wearing scrubs nor a badge that stated he was qualified to be sticking me with a needle โ€“ instead, he was wearing jeans and a red polo. I did not see him wash his hands because he came straight over from the table when the nurse called him; however, he did put on gloves.

I was incredibly uncomfortable when the nurse had him prep me but didnโ€™t want to say anything because I was afraid I might offend him and it was clear everyone was stressed and I assumed he had to be a nurse. I have donated blood a handful of times and have had no problem whatsoever โ€“ it usually takes me 8-10 minutes to donate and Iโ€™m well aware I need to be hydrating for the 24 hours leading up to my donation. Maybe it was an โ€œoff dayโ€ for my blood but I feel he did not know what he was doing and that is why it started taking longer than expected (also, at the end of it he say โ€œman, Iโ€™m 0 for 3 todayโ€ โ€“ so I am sure he did the same thing to two other donors). After a few minutes he started wiggling the needle and then the nurse had to come over and they had to replace the pressure cuff around my arm. This whole process was incredibly uncomfortable and I was scared what he was doing to my arm so I told him to stop and that I didnโ€™t want to finish โ€“ the nurse then procedure to scoff at me and say something inaudible that I assume was a rude comment about me giving up.

This was the second time I had an uncomfortable experience at a Red Cross blood donation and will no longer be donating blood unless there really is a drastic need โ€“ and I don't think there is a drastic need because I watched them turn away at least two people that showed up to donate blood at 6pm with me. One more thing, I overhead the man at the table checking in people say he was getting paid overtime so he didnโ€™t mind working late โ€“ maybe if the employees werenโ€™t taking advantage of the system they'd have more blood donors and the process would be more efficient.

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Preferred solution: I would like the Red Cross to ensure this does not happen to any other donors. .

American Red Cross Cons: Rude staff, Not paying attention, Misinformation.
