American Red Cross mis-treats their employees
The American Red Cross Blood Donor Services treats their employees horribly!! They have a great, world name, however, Southern California Region of the Red Cross is harrassing, discriminating, and treats their employees badly. Do not support the Red Cross by donating blood in Southern California. There are other blood donor companies where you can go that are good to their staff.
The hours are extremely long, with less than 12 hours between shifts, staff does not always allowed to take breaks, nor get lunches lunches within the 5 hours required in a shirft.
Staff is consistently threatened that they will lose their job if they mess up in any way. Moral is very low with staff because of constant write ups, threats, harrassments, being over worked.
Mileage is not paid within reasonable time. They are at least 2 months behind in paying mileage to employees.
Union contract is not signed after 2 years of negotiations.
One Administrative Director has been charged at previous job of steeling patient medications and self-injecting resulting in a gran-mal seisure and eventually loss of RN lisense.
Another head of the compnay has been charge and sentensed to prision for selling herion.
Both are in supervisor positions and higher level management.
Do you really want these people representing the Red Cross and donating your precious blood??
Monetary Loss: $35.

Same in Alabama.
Arc is filled with lazy liars
Staff are treated that way in Maine as well.
Ex employee...
I worked at Redcross in Huntsville al. The worst place ever!
I gave 5 yrs off my life to them. They have favorites, management tells your business to everyone you tell in private to them. Out on the road the supervisors sat around and talked while you work, would say rude things to certain ones and be nice to others. I finally had enough when a supervisor was really rude after we worked 10 hours and did alot.
Don't think this is a great place to work! It's *** to work so hard, yet be treated so bad.
I recently got a job at the Red Cross, and have been seriously disappointed by the organization. I was incredibly excited when I was offered a position as a collections tech, but after about 6 weeks, it's very clear why they have such an issue with turnover.
The schedule is schockingly erratic, with hours starting around 0530 (or even earlier) in the morning even to do just a three-hour drive with several hours of set up and travel. Sometimes we don't have to be in until 1100 or 1300. Sometimes it's 0300. We have to go back and forth to a city two hours away for training several times per week, and everyone seems overworked and totally apathetic.
Overall, it's the most unprofessional and disorganized workplace I've ever been a part of. Things are not done rationally, things are inconsistent yet somehow also high-pressure, breaks aren't given (because they have a non-profit loophole found in the Fair Labor Standards Act), infection control standards are almost non-existent (especially at drives out in the community), and the pay is low for such a physically demanding job in which one can't obtain any kind of normal, human work/life balance. I do not recommend working for the ARC, at least as a collections tech. Thankfully I only need this job in the short-term.
I can't imagine being trapped as an ARC tech due to life circumstances or family responsibilities. I'd go insane.
I recently heard about a nurse who was so over worked and stressed out she had a stroke and died. Just awful. I've been in the medical field a long time and this is completely unacceptable.
They did me a favor , after 15 years of complete dedication to this company they terminated me while on medical leave due to post-partum depression I'm sure you guys have heard of me...I kept all communication with them on weekly basis by phone and fax I would forward every Doctor's note as I was being treated/monitored weekly. They made me believe that I had their support , that they were compassionate towards me.
My doctor finally released me to go back to work before my expected date I had proved to him I was OK , on the spot I called red cross to notify them it was on a Friday they were just as happy as I was to know that I was released to return to work , Monday morning came and to my surprise there was a FedEx letter on my door , I was terminated! I called hr they refused to talk to me and BTW the union we had was no help at all.
There I was depressed again took me weeks to compose myself , I then applied successfully for unemployment benefits which red cross then took me to court to try and take them away, so yes I sat there in front of judge and red cross lawyers and hr staff....judge ruled in my favor!
They did me a favor because now I'm in a better place , I know I could of fought it like others did and I would of gotten my job back plus back pay but I felt so betrayed by them I had lost all respect for them that I never ever wanted to set a foot back on the premises......1995-****
The worst company to work for! Beware if you get a job here!
All work and no pay. Don't be a sucker!
I agree with the post that I just read I currently work there and we are being threatened with losing our job constantly. There is even a manager that works at the PPomona donor center that threatens and intimidates employees all the time.
Human resource has been told numerous times about what this manager is doing and instead of dealing with him the employee that has spoken up has been the one that was dealt with. Its really sad that a company that is supposed to be a humanitarian organization would treat people like a communist country would treat their citizens. Compassion is also one of their missions supposedly but these people have no compassion. Employees are told to lie to donors that come in just to get donors to donate what the red cross wants them to donate. If the donor doesn't want to donate what the red cross wants them to donate management has said that they don't need them to donate at all.
The Red Cross is not a non profit organization because if we are a non profit organization why are the management always talking about making a profit. They also have all these CEO and mangagers that get bonuses for the work they do.This is confusing to me why are they being rewarded for making a profit if we are not here for that we are suppose to be helping people.
I agree- I have had nothing but bad experiences as a volunteer by a paid worker and am very disappointed with my experience with an organization that I once had a high regard for.
I work for them and I'm bullied by a co-worker. My boss knows, he doesn't care.
He said I'd lose my job if I didn't get along with this guy. Now I just let him bully me - I need the job.
Awful to work for. They are lying to public and the world.
Why won't media like "20/20" investigate this organization? They treat employees horrendously. They are downright vicious to work for. They call employees names.
No regard for donors or donations. The truth needs to come out about this organization.
I agree Belinda! I'm looking for ARC past and present!
I have an opportunity for EVERYONE! Let me know if you are interested in hearing!
Yes I am definitely interested after what just happened with me. Please let me hear -I'm all ears!
As much as we would like all these "harsh acts and treatments" to be brought to light we need to realize people are here for one reason. To suppost themselves.
We all have families we need to take care of and reaponisbilitie to those around us. As much as we "dislike" upper management and the way they practice things. We are at the mercy of the donors, we have jobs because of the image ARC has. Its those donors who donate their time and products that keep us on the pay roll.
As great as it is to vent. We cant risk losing the support of the donors because then we will lose our jobs. With risk of exposure we risk our own livilyhood. I hate to be the one to say it, but if we are that happy.
We are free to go elsewhere. But most of us dont, because we cant afford to. And at the end of the day by dragging their name thru the mud.. We are sabotaging ourselves.
We need to be smart not vengeful... There has to be other ways of handling things.... As great as it is to vent.. Do it over drinks with friends..
Not online where nothing its really anonymous..
One second of frustration will cause more han then good. Lets not give them the upper hand
I work for American Redcross in NH and they want us to start working thanksgiving and christmas next year. This company sucks they take but never give.
The American red cross is the worst company to work for...management is trained to bully staff and your donated blood might not even get to a patients because paperwork is not done correctly. They are blood thirsty do not donate
Red Cross people are scam artists and do nothing but use their pity to make ALOT of money. Use your big time money (and they call themselves not for profit)to spend in the people that spend all 2-3 hours having to wait in line just to donate, then at the end of the day all the wasted blood...shame on you for wasting peoples time.
Stop lying and say you need all of this blood so that you can make a big bonus commission. You know how much blood you throw away.....enough said..
There were lots of days I would work from 7am - 11:30pm... I was allowed not eat breakfast, Lunch or Dinner...
I agree... I worked there for 5 years and was treated like ***...
Plus they end up throwing the blood away anyway because of the lack of hospitals around that they can sell it too...
I now work for a Hospital that collects there own blood... Do not donate money, time or blood to the red cross.
